SUMMARY:
There are many ways to do couples therapy, and several distinct models that have been used successfully. This presentation will look at the different models, what is effective about each, and how they are similar and different. The presenter will describe his own approach to couples therapy, with emphasis on improving communication and conflict resolution, and therapeutic procedures will be demonstrated. 
The content will include didactic and demonstration/discussion components, and Q&A will be encouraged.

OBJECTIVES:
 

  • Participants will be able to compare and contrast at least three models of couples therapy (similarities and differences)

  • Participants will be able to describe how to address three causes of defensiveness leading to escalation of arguments between couples.

  • Participants will be able to specify six rules of communication that can be taught to most couples to reduce conflict.

  • Participants will be able to demonstrate the ability to teach effective communication skills to couples.

SPEAKER:
Keith Jordan, LCSW is retired after 30 years with Orange County Mental Health, NY where he worked as a substance abuse counselor, inmate counselor and custody evaluator. He presently has a full-time private practice in Poughkeepsie, NY where he specializes in couples therapy and co-parenting counseling. He has an online Couples Group and an online Co-parenting Support Group.
