Preventative tips and resources will be provided to help prevent disordered eating and support those with eating disorders.
Objectives:
1.Participants will review DSM-5 criteria for the treatment of eating disorders, including common comorbid conditions.
2.Participants will be able to identify 3-5 biological, cultural, and psychological risk factors that contribute to the etiology and maintenance of eating disorder symptoms.
3.Participants will be able to identify four levels of care of eating disorder treatment (RES, PHP, IOP, and OP) including APA criteria for each level.
4.An overview of Renfrew’s Unified Treatment Model (UT) for the treatment of eating disorders will be presented.
Time Line:
First Half: ED diagnostic criteria- including disordered behavioral trends not yet included in the DSM-V. Signs and symptoms of AN, BN, BED, ARFID, Diabulimia, Orthorexia, and OSFED will be reviewed. Biological, cultural, and psychological factors will be discussed, including supporting research. The functions of an eating disorder, including the reinforcing nature of emotional avoidance, will be highlighted and conceptualized as a maintaining factor in ED symptomology.
Second Half: Treatment considerations: traditional treatments, and rationale for mindfulness based interventions. Observing three emotional components, as well as identifying antecedents, emotional responses, and consequences of eating disorder behaviors. In vivo, imaginal and interoceptive exposures will be reviewed. Levels of care will be defined, and APA criteria for higher level of care will be presented (i.e. medical status, suicidality, weights/vitals, motivation, co-occurring diagnoses, etc.) Resources for further learning will be shared (e.g., books, online resources, hotlines).
