Summary:
It is not enough to be a gay-friendly therapist; you must be gay informed. Dr. Kort will equip you with the right tools and up-to-date information you need in this rapidly changing population to more effectively counsel your lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning clients, and couples.
You will learn techniques to help your LGBTQ clients through the coming out process and learn to avoid using red-flag words: offensive words you might use (without you knowing!). Specific questions need to be asked during the intake session about developing identity and growing up LGBTQ to establish an effective treatment plan. Therapists will avoid the common mistake of believing, “a couple is a couple” and treating LGBTQ couples the same as their heterosexual counterparts.
Therapists will also learn the most current understanding of the issues facing LGBTQ couples and individuals around sex including open relationships, various sexual styles, kinks and fetishes. LGBTQ clients want therapists to have a cultural competency of their sex lives and relationships. Given that marriage is now legal for same sex couples therapists will learn how this impacts the couples today especially for those couples who are at a stage discrepancy in coming out.
Educational Objectives:
-

· Use specific interventions and assessment tools for LGBTQ clients and gay affirmative therapy.
· Distinguish using interventions that work and don’t work for different generations.
