How Can Buddhist Psychology Inform Contemporary Third-Wave Psychotherapies? Is this the “The Fourth Wave?”
Buddhist psychology offers a profound and practical framework for understanding the human mind, suffering, and the path toward well-being. While Western psychotherapy has traditionally focused on diagnosis, symptom reduction, and strengthening the personal self, Buddhist psychology invites us to explore deeper questions about the nature of identity, dissatisfaction, and awareness.
In this introductory webinar, participants will be introduced to several foundational insights from Buddhist psychology that are increasingly influencing contemporary psychotherapy and mental health practice. Topics will include the nature of suffering, impermanence, the concept of the non-solid self, and the role of mindful awareness and compassion in healing.
Participants will explore how these ideas can expand the therapeutic lens and offer practical tools for working with stress, anxiety, identity struggles, and the pressures faced by adolescents, emerging adults, and adults in today’s rapidly changing world.
Designed for psychologists and psychology graduate students interested in the intersection of contemplative wisdom and modern mental health, this session provides a clear and accessible entry point into one of the most influential psychological traditions in human history.
Participants will leave with a deeper appreciation of how Buddhist psychology can complement Western therapeutic approaches and provide meaningful pathways toward greater clarity, resilience, and compassion in both professional practice and everyday life.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Participants will describe three foundational constructs of Buddhist psychology relevant to mental health.
2. Participants will explain how Buddhist perspectives on suffering and identity differ from dominant Western psychological models.
3. Participants will identify at least one practical application of Buddhist psychological principles for clinical or personal development contexts.
SPEAKERS:
Drs. Pantaleno and Fisher are licensed psychologists in private practice who treat adolescents, adults, and emerging adults. Both are certified instructors in Koru mindfulness, and it is out of this work that they expanded their clinical interest into Eastern contemplative practices. Dr. Pantaleno co-founded the Buddhism and Contemplative Practices interest group, and both coordinate pro bono services for the Suffolk County Psychological Association
