DESCRIPTION:
This continuing education course provides supervisors of pre-licensed psychotherapists in New York State with the in-depth legal, ethical, and practical knowledge needed to mitigate risk, protect clients, and safeguard their own practice, meeting crucial applicable NYS requirements. We will explore complex supervisory risk management principles and scenarios, including best practices and documentation, all within the context of New York's regulatory landscape.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe legal and ethical mandates in supervision.
2. Analyze legal, professional and ethical principles to differing supervisory circumstances
3. Illustrate examples in which legal and professional risks to supervisors and supervisees occur
4. Develop strategies to prevent and address risks to supervisors and supervisees
5. Apply systemic approaches for risk management in supervision
Speaker: Bruce Hillowe, JD, PhD
Bruce V. Hillowe, J.D, Ph.D. is a senior mental healthcare attorney with a law practice in Mineola affiliated with the firm of Schaupp McDermott. A graduate of Binghamton University, Duke University School of Law, and Adelphi University Derner Institute (Clinical Psychology and Postdoctoral Programs), he formerly practiced as a psychologist-psychoanalyst, including as a coordinator of clinical training and director of a forensic mental health service. He was a teaching attending psychologist in law and ethics at a major teaching hospital for 15 years. He currently teaches courses in ethics and law as adjunct faculty at the Derner Institute. He has represented numerous mental health facilities, institutes, and practitioners. He has written articles, book chapters and a book on HIPAA compliance. He is listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers in healthcare law and was a long-time "SuperLawyer" featured in the New York Times Magazine.
