OVERVIEW:
This training examines the biopsychosocial nature of chronic pain, highlighting how the brain and nervous system play a central role in pain processing and somatic manifestations.
Participants will review foundational theories and definitions of pain, gain psychoeducation on the neurobiology of pain, and learn practical strategies for applying this knowledge in clinical settings. Emphasis will be placed on evidence-based interventions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Pain Reprocessing Therapy. Child-specific adaptations will be discussed, as well as strategies for facilitating effective conversations between individuals experiencing pain and their support networks.
Throughout, the training emphasizes fostering safety, resilience, and mind-body connection to help clients shift from fear-based to empowered approaches to pain management.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Explain the role of the brain and nervous system in the development and maintenance of chronic and neuroplastic pain.
2. Identify common cognitive distortions and behavioral patterns that amplify pain signals and maintain symptom severity.
3. Summarize the core principles and therapeutic sequence of Pain Reprocessing Therapy within a biopsychosocial treatment model.
4. Integrate psychoeducation, CBT strategies, and PRT skills into structured session plans.
5. Implement graded exposure and behavioral activation strategies to help clients reduce avoidance and re-engage in daily activities.
6. Demonstrate somatic tracking using curiosity cues and non-fearful attention through guided practice and real-time application.
